Self-Harm & Suicide

Suicide claims an average of 121 lives per day, making it the 10th leading cause of death in the nation. A growing number of teen suicides has become especially troubling in recent years. About 90 percent of individuals who die by suicide experience mental illness, which shows the importance of psychotherapy, medication and support from friends and family.

Suicide hotlines at 800-273-TALK (8255) or 211 are available at all times. Encourage anyone to call or to seek help from whoever they trust if you notice warning signs. Those include threats or comments about killing oneself, increased alcohol or drug use, social withdrawal, previous attempts at self-harm, dramatic mood swings and impulsive or reckless behavior.
